Texas Holdem Rules

How to play Texas Hold’em

Each player is dealt two cards. Five community cards are put faced up on the table. The players are required to make the best five-card hand using any combination of these seven cards.

To start two ‘Blind’ bets are posted. The player to the left of the dealer puts up the small blind, which is half of the minimum bet. The player to his left posts the big blind, which is equal to the minimum bet. The other players do not put up any money. The deal goes around the table and each player will ultimately act as the big blind, small blind and dealer in turn.

The game opens with each player getting two cards. The player on the small blind receives the first card and the dealer gets the last. Starting with the player to the left of the big blind, who can either call or raise the bet, the betting round goes around the table until it reaches the player with the small blind. The player with the big blind plays last and if no one has raised then he has the option to raise or check.

Between each round, the top card of the deck is discarded to prevent cheating – this card is called the burn card.

After the first round, three cards are dealt, turned face up on the table. This is known as the Flop and consists of the community cards to be used by all players. Betting begins with the active player left of the dealer.

The next round sees a fourth card face up in the middle of the table and is called the Turn. The betting again starts with the player to the left.

Following the Turn is the betting round called the River, where a fifth card is placed on the table. Usually, the size of the bet doubles in this round.

The ultimate Showdown determines the winner, who uses the best possible combination of five from his two hole cards and the five on the table.
